The Iron Genie Harmonograph is a contemporary celebration of the mechanical ingenuity of the Victorians.
Entirely handcrafted from mild steel and solid brass at Central St. Martin's workshops at King's Cross, London, the design reflects the regeneration of the local industrial area.
The Iron Genie Harmonograph is an interactive kinetic sculpture driven by pendulum movements. The drawings it creates are expressions of the combined frequencies at which the pendulums move. This can be adjusted by raising or lowering the pendulum weights, offering the potential for infinite variety and a certain unpredictability.
The Analogue Mechanism is inspired by an invention at the beginning of the nineteenth century, when the development of industrial mechanization heralded a surge of technological and scientific exploration.
At Public Institutions audiences can enjoy a visceral experience of these concepts. The Iron Genie has been a central attraction and inspiration at The Museum of the History of Science, Oxford, Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, and the University of Waterloo, Ontario.
